A necklace is a necklace, right? Actually, not quite. Choose the incorrect size of necklace and sadly you’ll find this out the hard way. Neck jewellery comes in different lengths and densities which vary according to the style and gender you’re buying for. To take the guesswork out of shopping for your next piece of neck jewellery, we’ve compiled this handy guide to help you on your way.
STANDARD NECKLACE SIZES FOR WOMEN
Fits snugly around the neck, similar to a choker.
Hangs easily right on the collarbone particularly on smaller, more petite women. Those with a fuller neck could experience more of a choker effect.
This is the most common of all necklace lengths for women and falls just beneath the collarbone. When shopping for a pendant to wear over a crew neck shirt, this is most probably the length you’d go for.
Keen to wear a low-cut shirt with a plunging neckline? A 20-inch necklace is your best bet, resting a mere couple of inches lower than the collarbone.
This length rests either right on the neckline of a low-cut top or just above.
A 24-inch necklace will most likely fall below the neckline of any top.
A popular length for strands of pearls, this length will comfortably fall below the bosom. Wear it as one single strand measuring 36 inches, or else double it and it becomes two strands of 18 inches.
STANDARD NECKLACE SIZES FOR MEN
Most often seen in beaded necklaces, this style of neck jewelry typically falls on the collarbone or just above and peeks out beneath a crew neck t-shirt.
Resting perfectly on the collarbone, this length is suited to unbuttoned shirts and low-cut v-necks but will most likely hide any pendants hanging on them.
If you’re looking for a single standalone chain, this is the length you’re after. It offers the wearer more breathing room plus, as it hangs a couple of inches below the collar bone, you have the option of wearing it under or over a shirt.
If it’s a sentimental or a faith-based pendant you’re wearing, a 24-inch necklace might be for you. This style is super long and fits underneath the clothing, resting right above the sternum.
*Do remember that these sizes are merely rough estimates as to typical men’s and women’s body sizes. Taller and more petite people may need to adjust their sizing accordingly.
